McNairy Pebble-Grain Chukka
Having spent the past few seasons playing with color, texture, and material, last fall Mark McNairy found himself searching for new ways to push the boundaries of footwear design. Inspiration struck in the form of a YouTube video of Werner Herzog cooking and eating his shoe after losing a bet to his fellow documentary filmmaker Errol Morris. “When I saw the look on Herzog’s face, it hit me. I had to make a shoe you could eat,” the designer recalls. “Problem is, I can’t cook for s**t.” Enter Bon Appetit editor-in-chief (and former GQ style editor) Adam Rapoport. "An edible shoe? At first I was like, ‘you’ve got to be kidding me,” Rapoport recalls. “But then I realized: This is exactly the sort of real-dude dilemma the new BA exists to solve. So we cracked a few cans of Budweiser, blasted the AC/DC, hit the test kitchen, and got down to business.” Three months a half-dozen prototypes later, the shoe, which McNairy proudly calls the "world's first fully edible men's chukka to be based on a traditional English last,” was ready.
