The Cooper Union is famous as the old brown brick schoolhouse that Peter Cooper’s endowment built — the first building in New York to anticipate the invention of the elevator by leaving an empty space for it, albeit a circular one. Its Great Hall is where Abraham Lincoln gave a speech that would prove a turning point in his quest for the presidency. It is also a pre-eminent college that combines art and science under a few roofs, and where — significantly today — tuition is free.
